Danforth Dental Cleaning: A Must For Good Oral Health

Dental cleaning is known by the term “oral prophylaxis” among dental health professionals. Danforth dental cleaning is not just an ordinary or simple procedure that patients can perform by themselves. Daily tooth brushing is quite different from professional Danforth dental cleaning or oral prophylaxis.

While the former is an indispensable health and hygiene practice—one of the basics of oral and physical health that everyone should observe—dental cleaning involves a more extensive and systematic removal of hardened plaque that has accumulated on teeth surfaces and in the oral cavity.

Plaque is actually bacterial build-up on the smooth surfaces of the teeth. This is what routine tooth brushing and flossing easily eradicates and prevents. However, it is not uncommon for plaque to harden despite regular brushing of teeth. Because of the various nooks and crevices in the human mouth, it is natural even for the most careful individuals who frequently brush and floss their teeth to develop tartar or mineralized plaque. These can only be removed with professional Danforth dental cleaning.

If hardened plaque or tartar is not eliminated, food sugars and carbohydrates further interact with the bacteria and produce acids that break down the tooth enamel, leading to tooth decay or what dentists call dental caries. In turn, these cavities are what cause toothaches, pain, and inflammation, requiring further dental treatment later on such as fillings. Moreover, patients may suffer from related diseases such as inflammation of the gums, commonly known as gingivitis.

Danforth dental cleaning effectively rids the oral cavity of harmful plaque and prevents the formation of cavities and gingivitis, thus maintaining the good oral health of the patient. A dental hygienist would perform dental cleaning using professional solutions and instruments that aid in the removal of hardened plaque, such as a tooth scaler. After cleaning, the teeth may also be polished to improve its appearance, and fluoride treatment may also be applied to fortify the teeth.

Dental cleaning is recommended by dentists at least twice a year, or once every six months. This way, plaque build-up and hardening is prevented. Danforth dental cleaning is a procedure that requires a trip to the dentist’s office, but its benefits far outweigh the consequences of tooth decay and gingivitis. The time and cost of regular Danforth dental cleaning would come out to be more economical compared to the expenses that a patient would have to endure with corrective or restorative treatment due to cavities or gum problems.

However, patients should always still continue to do their part in observing proper and regular brushing of their teeth, and using effective toothpastes with fluoride. Flossing is also highly urged, as well as tongue cleaning. Many people neglect the tongue as an essential part of the oral cavity. It needs to be cleaned as well. There are various special implements available in the market, which scrape the tongue of food debris and bacteria build-up as well. There are even implements or special toothbrushes that massage the gums and tongue.

Those who value a great attractive smile and sweet-smelling breath know that regular professional Danforth dental cleaning is a simple but effective and worthwhile regimen to follow.
